Sights to SeeAmong many local sites are the world's largest panda reserve, the world's tallest Buddha statue, and one of China's four holy Buddhist mountains. Whatever one's interests, there is always plenty to do.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is a pearl in the water works construction of ancient China. Built over 2,200 years ago, it still provides benefits for the people. The irrigation system was erected on the Minjiang River at the foot of Yulei Mountain originally blocked the river so that water could not flow eastward, the plain had no access to river irrigation and agricultural development in the region was therefore seriously affected. Li Bing, governor of Shu Prefecture during the Warring States period (475-221 BC), made a careful survey of the region and then had a channel cut through Yulei Mountain. He put a dyke in the middle of the Minjiang River to divide it into two parts. This happened about 250 BC. He also ordered the local people to open channels and canals on the plain so as to divert the river for irrigation purposes. This finally turned the agricultural potential of the plain into a land of abundance.
Wolong Nature Reserve
The Wolong Nature Reserve is located high in the mountains of western China's Sichuan Province; protected since 1963. Wo Long means "sleeping dragon" and is a description of the mountainous peaks surrounding the Pitiao River valley that runs through the center of the Wolong Nature Reserve.
Four ethnic groups of people live in and around Wolong Nature Reserve: Qiang, Tibetans, Han Chinese, and Hui.The local Qiang people believe a giant dragon came wandering through the valley and fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and trees and decided to go to sleep, and never woke up.
Wolong is lush deciduous and evergreen temperate forest and high ice covered mountains. Wolong is home to over 6,000 species of plants and animals, and is one of the last protected homes of both the giant and red pandas, takin, and golden snub-nose monkey. To help pandas survive, the Chinese government and other concerned groups built a special breeding center inside the Wolong Nature Reserve. The Center is called the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The Center cares for over 50 captive giant pandas, many of which were rescued after an injury or illness, and several red pandas. Each year new giant panda babies are born to female pandas at the center. The Conservation Center is the most successful facility in the world for breeding giant pandas. Most of the giant pandas in zoos around the world come from Wolong.
