Suzhou is a world-famous tourist city. The beautiful natural sights and brilliant human sites enhance each other’s beauty, which make it an attractive destination for tourists from home and abroad. Streets and rivers go side by side, architecture built along waters with alley in front and river behind, which forms the unique style and features of Suzhou. Small bridges, flowing waters and special houses show the tranquil part of Suzhou, while distinctive gardens with historical attractions boasts it an ancient city.

Suzhou is located in the center of the Yangtze River delta, in the south of Jiangsu province, with east to Shanghai, west to Tai Lake, backs on Wuxi, faces to Zhejiang province. With the Grand Canal Beijing-Hangzhou winding from the north to south, the railway Beijing-Shanghai coming through and adding highways and airports, Suzhou is accessible by ship, by train and by air. Covering an area of 8488 square kilometers, with a population of 6.2million, Suzhou is also a prosperous city in China. Thanks to its mild climate, Suzhou is a hot destination for tourists all the year round.

Built in 514BC, Suzhou has a long history of 2500years. Having been the capital of Wu in the Spring Period, the city is still retains many ancient sites with Xishi(one the four most beautiful ladies), Wuzixu(a prominent strategist and the founder of ancient city of Suzhou ) and many other famous persons. When the Grand Canal linked many other canals together in China, Suzhou became a center of silk trade along the waterway and its economy make a great improvement. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, The expanding of the Grand Canal brought the prosperity of Suzhou. It just at that time, many scholars, retired officials and merchants began to construct their own gardens as their resorts. Since different persons have different tastes, the gardens in Suzhou also have different styles. However, the owners of the gardens had one common point that is most of them were educated very well and good at painting and making poem. Because of this, the gardens are full of cultural atmosphere. Strolling in the gardens, you will feel you are enjoying a beautiful landscape picture and reading a poem. The gardens in Suzhou are compound of classical architecture, charming natural scenery, rare flowers, exquisite carving and traditional painting and calligraphy, blending the beauty of nature and art. It has more than 60 gardens, including Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden, which are two of the most famous gardens in China, in addition to the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Imperial Summer Villa in Chengde. In 1997, the classic gardens in Suzhou were listed as a world cultural heritage site by the UNESCO.

Suzhou has not only unique gardens but also charming scenery of mountains and rivers, honoring to be the” heaven on earth”. The scattered temples and ancient sites make it the third ancient city behind Beijing and Xian.

Suzhou is also famous for its handcrafts and performing arts. The delicate Su embroidery is one the four most famous embroidery of China, along with Xiang embroidery in Hunan, Yue embroidery in Guangdong and Shu embroidery in Sichuan. The exquisite fans and elegant silk are also popular with tourists. Suzhou is home to Kun Opera and Su Opera, which are the gems of Chinese opera.
