Chinese Cloisonne
Cloisonne is a unique artwork with a long history. Although the technique was transmitted to China from the Western, the Chinese cloisonne is the peak of perfection with Beijing as its cradle. The earliest extant products were made in the Yuan dynasty and the Ming dynasty is the prosperity of cloisonne. In particular, during the Jingtai period, the technique was further improved and a number of fine products were made. And the Qing Dynasty witnessed a peak of development of cloisonne in both color and technique.
Cloisonne has another name inlaid enamel which is the unique technique of the combination of porcelain and bronze. The making of cloisonne requires rather elaborate and complicated processes. When doing the cloisonne, firstly, use the red coppery to make the body, secondly, stick the pattern on the bronze body by oblate and thin brass wires, then fill the inlay pattern by enamel glaze material in different colors, the last procedure is the firing over and over, polishing and gilding. We may say, the technique of cloisonne is used not only the bronze crafts, but also the porcelain crafts, meanwhile, fetching in plenty of traditional and carving technique, which is the combination of Chinese traditional arts.
The cloisonne products are very beautiful with brilliant color, splendid appearance and elegant characteristic.. There are more than 60kinds of products including vases, bowls, plates, wine sets, smoking sets, lamps and lanterns, sugar bowls, spice boxes, trophy cups, birds and beasts and so on. An exquisite piece of cloisonne must have moist and flossy colors, bright and sturdy body, delicate appearance and splendid patterns. As a high-grade artwork, it is very popular with people from domestic and abroad and many people regard cloisonne as their first choice when they choose presents to send others.
The original purpose to make cloisonne is to furnish the temple and places because its splendid appearances were harmonious with the majestic atmosphere. With the technique matured and more kinds of products appeared, cloisonne become available for common people. Nowadays, cloisonne vases, bracelet and dangler are popular with young girls. In Beijing and other cities, there are many shops selling cloisonne articles.
