|
|
| Harbin, with its long
history, and the cradle of Jin and Qing Dynasties and
the settlement of multi-nationalities. Situated in the
belt within 4404N to 4640N and 12042E to 13010E, the
city is located in the temperate zone with a character
of continental climate. The Songhuajing River, like a
shining pearl string , winds through the domain of this
distinctive, celebrated city in the northeast China.
The well-webbed branches of the river affords a luxuriant
vegetation. |

|
| On the north side of
Songhua river, there is a recreational area covering
3800 hectares. The sun island park is in this area and
contains gardens, one of them called the Japanees frienship
garden (Ironic name?), and severa atractions for young
and old: A water world, a crocodile taming and show center
and so on. All those attractions are closed in autumn,
winter and early spring. |

| Wudalianchi |
|
|
|
| The area is a volcanic
museum which also attracts scientists and researched
as well as tourists. The youngest but largest of the
volcanoes are Mount Laohei and Mount Huoshao, which last
erupted 260 years ago. Mount Laoheis slopes are covered
with cinder and are very steep. Its funnel C shaped crater
is a hundred meters deep. When it erupted last, the molten
lava pouring down from the crater blocked a river and
created five dammed lakes. Numbers from one to five,
giving them in Chinese the name Wudalianchi, identifies
them. |
|
| Zhalong
nature reserve |
|
|
|
| In the Zhalong wildlife
reserve reeds and marshlands can be found everywhere,
making an ideal nesting site for the red crowned cranes
and other species of cranes and waterfowl. Without suitable
breeding grounds the numbers of red crowned cranes, and
other endangered species of wildlife, would inevitably
be reduced, threatening extinction. To meet human needs,
marshlands are drained and turned over to agriculture;
reeds are harvested for domestic purposes; rivers are
re-routed and new roads built. The red crowned cranes
lose the wetland breeding grounds, to which they used
to return during the breeding season. |
