| Temple Of Heaven |
Built in 1420, occupying an area
of 273 hectares, the Temple of Heaven is the largest imperial architecture
for worshiping heaven in the world, and one of the most unique
architectural groups in the world as well. It not only completely
expresses the adoration of Chinese people towards the heaven, the
earth and the divinities, but also reflects the simple concept
of the universe of Chinese people in ancient times and the high
artistic level Chinese people had achieved in architecture several
hundred years ago .The Temple of Heaven was listed on the World
Heritage List by the UNESCO in December 1998.
The Temple of Heaven is divided into two parts of the outer altar
and inner alter by two u walls. According to traditional Chinese
concept of circular heaven and square earth, the wall in the north
is circular, symbolizing the heaven, while the wall in the south
is square, implying the earth, The major buildings are located
in the inner alter ,To the north of the complex is the Hall of
prayer for Good Harvest, a magnificent piece mounted on a three-tiered
marble terrace, was where emperors held grand ceremonies to pray
for good harvests. To the south of the complex are the Round Altar
and the lmperial Vauit of Heaven, where emperors held sacrificial
rites. To the west complex is the Hall of Abstinence, where the
emperors would prepare themselves for the solemn occasion by spending
a night fasting.
As an imperial sacrificial ground in the Ming and Qing dynasties,
pines and cypress were densely planted. Today, tourists can still
feel the solemn and quite atmosphere created by the mystic altars
and old trees. |
